Cannon is a company that has been in the gun safe market for a long time now. As such, they have a lot of models that can be confusing for new customers.
Cannon safes are not only priced incredibly well, but they have a lot of features that make them one of the best ‘value’ brands in the game.
Sadly, there are a few things that are not commendable about Cannon. For example, they are known to have some of the worst customer service in the industry.
Still, all this means is that you need to be a little more vigilant when it comes to selecting a safe from Cannon. Luckily, we have 3 safes here that will be perfect for all sorts of activities and people. From the gun collector to someone who wants to protect his family, we have a recommended safe for everyone!
Best Cannon Gun Safes Compared Head-to-Head
Best Cannon Gun Safes Reviewed
Best Overall: Cannon American Eagle Series 24
Considering how cheap this safe is, its quite surprising that Cannon has been able to pack this many features into the safe. For the average user looking to protect his/her valuables, this is the best Cannon safe they can buy.
This is something that you do not expect from a safe in this price range. The upholstery ensures that your guns and other valuables are protected from scratches and dents. Of course, you should not expect carpets of amazing quality for a price like this, but it still gets the job done.
Sadly, this safe is only rated for 1200-degrees fire protection. Many other companies in the industry go for 1400-degrees protection in order to make sure that the contents inside the safe stay intact. However, the good news is that the Cannon American Eagle is able to sustain fire for 60-minutes as opposed to 30 or 45 for most other safes.
This is one of the things that I love about this safe. It is compact enough to fit into any room. The fact that it does not have a lot of depth means that it is perfect for small apartments where space is an issue.
Both the Hammerstone Black and Hammerstone Charcoal finishes look beautiful. It is easy to make the safe blend into the décor of a modern bedroom and I did not find that it looked out of place in most modern settings.
At just 400 pounds, this safe can be moved by you and a couple of your friends with ease. Unless you need to move it above a flight of stairs, setting up this safe should not be much trouble.
From all the Cannon safes I have seen, this one seems to combine luxury and functionality with finesse. On top of that, the price is very reasonable and it may very well be the best safe you can buy in its price range.
Runner up: Cannon American Eagle Series 48
At the surface, the American Eagle Series 48 seems like a larger version of the Series 24. Technically, it is. However, we are going to take a look at it from the point of view of the gun collector. As such, whereas our previous review focused on basic functionality, this one will focus more on how this gun safe is ideal for the collector.
As the name suggests, this safe is able to accommodate up to 48 guns. Of course, like all other safes, the actual amount of guns you can fit inside the safe will vary depending on the optics that you use and the size of the guns in general (along with how you set up the shelves). Still, this safe has a lot of space for you to play around with.
All of the shelves can be moved around or removed. If you just want to fit your guns inside, then you can remove all the shelves except the top one which can house ammo and other weapon accessories. Otherwise, you can install shelves for your other valuables.
The American Eagle comes with a lot of accessories that are targeted at the collector. The biggest one is the addition of the MOLLE door organizer. This provides you with a lot of pouches that can be used to store your handguns as well as other valuables. On top of this, you also have the media kit with power outlets and USB/Ethernet ports. Lastly, the interior is upholstered just like it is on the series 24 to protect your valuables.
Considering its storage capacity, this is still one of the cheapest safes available on the market. The Cannon American Eagle Series 48 is definitely not recommended for the average gun owner. However, a collector without a lot of cash on hand will definitely love the number of features they can get for such a low price.
Although this is meant to be a personal safe for storing documents and small valuables, the removable shelf makes the Edge Mini a good safe for storing a self-defense weapon. Here are some of the features that make it a decent safe.
Most other safes of this nature and price have a key lock. While that is a decent option, it is possible for your kids to find the key and open the safe. Having an electronic lock provides an additional layer of security.
It is possible for you to have this safe fitted into a wall or into an enclosure of your choice. Sadly, this option is a little expensive, costing a lot more than the safe itself. Still, being able to hide the safe provides an additional layer of security.
Dual Alarm System
The safe comes with two alarm systems. If the safe has been tampered with, it can either vibrate or emit a sound. This can be a very decent option as it may be possible for you to know of an intruder before you see him.
Not only is the shelf removable for extra space, but you also get foam padding. While this is not as nice as the upholstered interior in the previous two safes, it does ensure that none of your valuables are damaged. On top of that, the door hinge allows you to open the door up to 120-degrees, allowing for easy access into the safe.
While safes like these are not effective against professional burglars, the Edge Mini certainly tries. It has a steel plate and two locking bolts that will mean that it is almost impossible to open the safe using mechanical tools. Still, any decent electric drill should be able to open the safe.
The Edge Mini is a decent safe that is very cheap. The option of having it professionally fitted is nice, but I wouldn’t recommend it due to it being expensive. Still, this is an ideal safe for protecting your handgun from your kids.
Cannon has a storied history having been in business since 1965. Their parent company is Alpha Guardian, which has been in the business of manufacturing and distributing safety equipment for a long time.
The great thing about Cannon is that it is a start-to-finish manufacturer. This means that everything from the beginning to the end is manufactured by Cannon themselves. Having done this for over fifty years is bound to have made them adept at quality control and ensuring product quality.
Their safe collection encompasses everything you might need. From a gun safe to a home/office safe, you can find a safe that will be perfect for your needs in their portfolio.
Sadly, Cannon has been a controversial brand in the gun safe market. Those who love their safes love them to death, claiming they offer the best quality at a reasonable price. However, many people whose safes stopped functioning properly at one point or another have had to deal with their customer service, which is sub-par, to say the least.
Where Are Cannon Safes Built?
This might come as a surprise. Most high-end manufacturers make their safe inside of the US. People generally perceive products that were manufactured locally to be of high quality and less likely to break.
Companies that manufacture gun safes in Cannon’s price range usually make use of China owing to its cheap labor. These include companies such as Kodiak and Bighorn.
Cannon, on the other hand, manufactures its safes in Mexico. Personally, I would consider Mexico to be a middle of the road choice when it comes to American and Chinese manufacturing. While an American manufactured safe would obviously give me the most peace of mind, Mexico is not bad considering the fact that the company is probably able to keep a close check on its manufacturing process.
Why Buy a Cannon Gun Safe?
Here are a few reasons why you might want to purchase a Cannon gun safe:
TRULOCK Internal Hinge: Cannon has a patented hinge that is not only designed to make the safe more secure, but also provides easier access to its contents.
Triple Hard Plate: The steel plate on Cannon safes is designed to be difficult to drill into. Obviously, a drill powerful enough will be able to penetrate the safe and access its contents. However, it is extremely unlikely that your average burglar has such a powerful tool at hand.
Dual Stage Door Seal: This is another security feature not found on many safes. The Dual Stage Door Seal has triple fins that make it impossible for an intruder to pry open the safe using non-electronic tools.
Fire Protection: Unlike other safes in the market that usually offer 45-minute fire protection, Cannon’s safes are rated to survive in a fire for 60-minutes.
Accessories: Most of Cannon’s safes come with accessories that you would have to purchase separately if you buy another manufacturer’s safes. For example, their safes usually already have a door organizer for storing handguns.
Media Box: Cannon safes have a media box with outlets for plugging in electric components.
Price: As stated by us numerous times above, Cannon Safes are priced incredibly competitively, and they strive to offer mid-range safes at entry-level prices.
We went through 3 different Cannon Safes. The two variants of the Cannon American Eagle Gun Safe do not differ much in features, but the size is key. An enthusiastic gun collector will prefer the larger variant with its ability to store up to 48 guns. Someone who likes to keep a fair amount of guns at hand but isn’t a collector could make do with the 24 guns version.
Lastly, the Edge Mini personal safe is cheap and effective for a self-defense weapon. While it will not protect your belongings from an intruder, it will make sure that your kids/other family members are unable to access your guns/valuables.
